2007 - 2008 Community Projects

Last year our club had a large Local Community Service Project. The culmination of several years work to build an ADA baseball field for the mental and physical disabled , although we continue to fund the local “Miracle League” in support of this project. This year we would like to highlight the smaller projects we accomplish on a yearly basis:

1. Blood drive - 60-75% of our membership gives blood, this is done about 8 times during the Rotary year. (health)
2. Sulzbacher Center - Members meet at the Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless to cook food and serve to the Homeless 4 times during the year, average 6 - 12 members per visit. (hunger)
3. Environmental - River City Clean-up Day - Meet at a local park on March 15 with about 20 members plus members of the Interact club we sponsor to clean up unwanted debris from the creeks and tributaries to the Saint Johns River. (water/environment)
4. Bell Ringing - During the Christmas Season, 50% of our members participate in collecting money for the Salvation Army, We work two different locations December 1st and 8th. (poverty/hunger)
5. Toys for Tots - During our Annual Christmas party we collect and contribute approximately 100 toys to the US Marines for distribution, 90% participation. (youth)
6. West Jacksonville is co-hosting a Clay Shoot on April 3 to raise funds for high school excellence awards and scholarships, and other worthy projects. Approximately $12,000 net is raised. (youth)
7. Charity Grants - Each April, West Jacksonville awards $12,000 to worthy charities in our area. 10-15% participation through committees; 100% participation in monetary gifts. (all)
8. Eddy awards - participation at the $1,300 level as requested. (youth/literacy)
9. FCCJ Nursing Program scholarships - a scholarship fund begun by our club is now self-sustaining and provides two full scholarships each year to nursing students with financial needs. (health)
