West Word for 10/24/2008
The Blue Angels
The United States Navy’s Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, popularly known as the Blue Angels, was formed in 1946 and was the world’s first officially sanctioned military aerial demonstration team.[citation needed] The squadron’s six demonstration pilots fly the Boeing FA-18 Hornet in more than 70 shows at 34 locations throughout the United States each year, where they still employ many of the same practices and techniques used in their aerial displays in 1946. Since their inception, the “Blues” have flown a variety of different aircraft types for more than 427 million spectators worldwide.
Notes
Ed Pratt-Dannals gave a very interesting talk on the Duval County Schools and some of the challenges facing them from local and State levels. The most important thing to take away from his talk is that they are taking a proactive approach to all problems both acute and anticipated. They are not complaining about the issues and predicting doom and gloom because of all that faces them. They are working together with the community and the school system to align in one direction that is positive for all.
A very nice resolution was given in Honor of Leon Calvert and his wife graciously accepted.
Lee Wimberley reminded us about Career Day on the calendar. There will not be a meeting at the Holiday Inn on October 29th. See below for details.
Also in the news, Mike McCorvey told a good joke about a parrot and a dog for which no apologies were necessary.
Family or Rotary:
Our heartfelt sympathy and prayers are with Rod Porter’s family during this difficult time. Rod was a great Rotarian a true friend and neighbor and we will miss him dearly. God bless him and comfort his family during this difficult time.
For the new members, it was during Rod’s term as President that the “How I got To Where I’m At” program began. More details about his term are online.
