Chaffee Trail EarlyAct

The first of it’s kind in Duval County, the Chaffee Trail Elementary EarlyAct Club was started in January of 2009. The club is led by 2008 Duval County Teacher of the Year, Lucretia Miller and sponsored by the Rotary Club of West Jacksonville. Also helping start the club and providing tremendous support is the Bishop Snyder High School Interact Club and Interact sponsor GiGi Carroll.

The EarlyAct Club is off to a strong start and meets every other week. Elections were held at the first meeting and club officers are in place, and responsible for leading the meetings. Each meeting starts with the Pledge of Allegiance and reciting the 4-Way Test. Recently, the EarlyAct members received their official club t-shirts to wear for projects and club meetings, provided by the Rotary Club of West Jacksonville. West Jax Rotary also provides funding for snacks served during the after school meetings.

The members are motivated students who are looking to make a difference in the community they serve. They are currently raising money to help build schools in Afghanistan through their “Pennies for Peace” campaign. Other projects scheduled for the remainder of the school year include a recycling project and working with the Bishop Snyder Interact Club on the Relay for Life fundraiser in May.

Not only are these students learning the meaning of “Service Above Self”, but Interact member, Ryan Chelf, is creating/coordinating a mentoring program between Bishop John J. Snyder High School and Chaffee Trail Elementary School as his Eagle Scout project. The Interact Club will actively participate in the mentoring and enthusiastically recruit classmates to mentor all Chaffee Trail students who choose to be a part of this program.
