An extra meeting is planned in January with the Riverside club for a JU basketball game on January 15th. This is fund raiser for the club with $3 of each ticket sale going back to our club. There is also a BBQ dinner included. This game is against East Tennessee State with a 3:15 PM tip-off. More details to follow.
Ken Baker introduced our guest speaker, Steve Wallace, President of the Florida State College at Jacksonville.
The college is now separated into four different divisions to meet the needs of our students and community.
- Florida State College: This is the largest division and is the traditional four year college. The college now has nine and soon to be ten baccalaureate degrees offered.
- Florida Coast Career Tech: This division is for the technical programs leading to an industry certification. Examples of the programs offered are truck repair and plumbing.
- Community Education: This division includes such things as continued adult education, GED preparation, and English language instruction.
- Military, Public Safety and Security: This division gives training to all branches of the military and also to Fire and Police departments. In addition, the division trains other Federal agencies in the use of firearms.
The Artist Series continues with upcoming musical plays such as Wicked and Jersey Boys.
70% of all high school students entering the college must go through some type of remedial education in math and English. This issue of remedial education is one the college and Duval County’s schools administrators are attempting to solve
Aviation training remains one of the very successful programs administered by the school. The air traffic controller training is now certified by the FAA. Soon a new 20 million dollar aircraft maintenance service facility will be opened to better train aircraft mechanics. This new facility is partnered with Flight Star, a local company which does heavy aircraft maintenance, overhaul, and repair at the Cecil Commerce Center.
