West Word for 4/20/2011

Nat Glover
President, Edward Waters CollegeSince 1966 President Glover has experienced firsthand the power and value of an Edward Waters College education. After he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science from EWC, Glover began his career in law enforcement with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

He rose quickly through his career, achieving the rank of Sergeant in 1974, Chief of Services in 1986, and Director of Police Services in 1991. He also held other various leadership positions, and was part of one of the first hostage negotiation teams in the country. In 1995, President Glover was elected Sheriff of Jacksonville, and became the first black Sheriff Jacksonville had seen in more than 100 years. As Sheriff, he restructured and polished an organization of approximately 3,000 employees, and kept a balanced $230 million budget. He also donated approximately $250,000 of his pension to a scholarship fund for low-income children in Jacksonville.

Despite his flourishing career in law enforcement, President Glover still had a hunger for furthering his education and the education of others. In 1987 he graduated from the University of North Florida with a Master of Education degree. After serving two terms as Sheriff, he became a special advisor to UNF President John Delaney, focused on promoting higher education, college recruitment and drop-out prevention. Currently, he is championing The Jacksonville Commitment, a program designed to identify, recruit, and retain low-income students while providing scholarship opportunities to attend several institutions of higher education in Duval County.

For his devotion to education and society, he has been given the Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award granted by the Jacksonville Jewish Community, and the Sallye B. Mathis Award for Outstanding Community Service by the Jacksonville Branch NAACP.

President Glover comes to EWC as a highly honored community leader and public servant, and brings a new perspective with his educational and professional success and knowledge. We are excited to have him as we work toward transforming EWC into a dynamic, globally diverse learning-centered community focused on academic excellence, research, and bettering humanity.
