District 6970 Disaster Relief Committee works with the District’s Club Presidents and Members to plan for future emergencies. Objective is to have Clubs throughout our District prepared to deal with the logistics/challenges should natural disasters occur; and, to have a network established to efficiently and effectively assist our own District communities and those around the Southeastern U.S. and the world. Committee works with the DG to coordinate relief programs, including training, and thereby have a cadre of volunteers who can provide and foster a vital window of community services and humanitarian endeavors to aid victims of large-scale, catastrophes.
The Program is highly specialized and entails: (a) The process of becoming an official certificated-volunteer with the appropriate credentials; and, (b) Learning the fundamental principles, policies, and procedures when working within the governmental EOCs (Emergency Operations Centers). EOCs are central command / control facilities responsible for carrying out the principles of emergency-preparedness and disaster-management functions at a strategic level in an emergency situation; thus ensuring the continuity of operation of a political subdivision; and, responsible for the high-level, or “big picture” and have ongoing situational awareness of the disaster. The primary purpose of an EOC is to collect, gather and analyze data; make decisions that protect life and property; maintain continuity of the community within the scope of applicable laws; and, disseminate those decisions to all the appropriate and concerned agencies and individuals. Rotarians who are certificated and credentialed by the Red Cross as being an Official Government-Liaison Representative are trained to coordinate and assist in a comprehensive array of humanitarian-relief and community-services / endeavors with local, state, federal governmental, NGO, military partners for the benefit of disaster victims. Rotarians will thereby function as official community-service participants and accordingly assist in the ongoing dealings with the logistics and other vital challenges which occur in the aftermath of emergencies.
