This Week’s Speaker: Loran Smith
Former UGA Sideline Reporter

A former Bulldog MVP and track captain, Loran Smith, has had varied responsibilities with the Bulldogs over the years including assistant sports information director, business manager of athletics, and executive director of the Georgia Bulldog Clubs.  Loran graduated with a degree in Journalism.

He assists with packaging of radio broadcasts, is co-host of Tailgate Show and sideline color announcer. and is executive producer of the Mark Richt TV show. He is editor of football game programs and has authored: “GLORY, GLORY” (with Lewis Grizzard) “Fifty Years on the Fifty,” the Orange Bowl story; “Dooley’s Dawgs” (with Vince Dooley); “Between the Hedges”, a story of Georgia’s first 100 years of football; “Let a Dead Horse Rest”, “Let the Big Dawg Eat”, (with his wife, Myrna), a collection of tailgate recipes; “Finish the Drill”, the inside story of Georgia’s 2002 Championship season, “Beloved Dawgs”, “The Athens Sketch Book”, “The Georgia Football Vault” and five books on the Masters.

A native of Wrightsville, Ga., he is past chairman of the State of Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997.

He is married to the former Miss Myrna Warren of Covington, Ga. They have two children, Camille and Kent, both graduates of Georgia.

Family of Rotary

  • Jerry Spinks remains in St Vincent’s where he had surgery to remove a block in the intestine and is suffering from sepsis. Jerry is in critical condition in need of our prayers.  Update:  Since the meeting, we are saddened to report that Jerry has passed away.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
  • Mike Corrigan reported that Maynard Cox (the snake man) passed away.

Pop-Ups

  • Phil Risley had a pop up reminder about the Blue Angels on November 4th.
  • Jim Riggins had a pop up about the dictionary project the end of this month. The dictionaries have been ordered and he needs volunteers to help distribute them to nine schools comprising 1200 3rd. graders. The distribution date will be forthcoming
  • Wally Barrs had a pop up about the highway cleanup (Ortega road) on 10/22/11
  • Bob Kidd honored Bob Goodwin’s family presenting them a memorial resolution from our club. Bob was inducted into our club 04/21/71, a member for nearly 40 years & a Paul Harris fellow. Bob, born 11/18/30, passed away 12/10/10 at age 80. Bob was an Eagle Scout, Brown University NROTC graduate, Accomplished Naval Aviator, 43 year member of Riverside Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Masons, Shrine, Fla. Yacht Club, Hibernian Society, YMCA and the Jax Hanger of Quiet Birdmen. Bob owned and operated Association Insurance Management Inc. for more than 30 years. Bob was active on numerous committees and club projects in Rotary, notably as a Polio survivor himself, his support of Rotary International’s Polio Plus campaign. Bob is survived by his wife of 26 years Marline, one son and daughter, one sister and two grandchildren.

  • Dr. Wynne PHD received his undergraduate degree in London and his PHD in Psychology at Edinburgh College in 1986. He has taken his education into the study of Canine and wolves.
  • 40 percent of American households have a dog and 50 percent of those households allow their dogs to sleep on their bed.
  • The relationships we have with our dogs are very intimate.
  • Dogs are a subspecies of canis Lupus as is the grey wolf.
  • The company of a dog is healthy for us and can reduce blood pressure and extend our lives.
  • Dogs can also be a danger, 13,000 people are bitten by dogs daily in the U.S. and between bites and spreading disease, dogs are the second most expensive health problem in our society today.
  • The most common victim of dog attacks is children, specifically boys, between the age of 9 and 12.
  • Dogs have a very positive impact on people’s lives in terms of the happiness of the population.
  • A dog is easy to tame and takes, on average, 49 days.
  • Dogs are distinguished from the wolf in that they remain as puppies throughout their lives maintaining a child like wonder of the world.
