For the past 18 years, Ju’Coby has dedicated her life as an advocate for equality in developing and implementing programs for the homeless, veterans, youth and low-come in the community. Finding new courage that he never knew he had, he stormed into the kitchen and announced to his wife, “From now on, you need to know that I am the man of this house and my word is the ‘Law.’ You will prepare me gourmet meals, you will clear the dishes and serve me scrumptious desserts. After dinner, you are going to go upstairs with me and care for me all through the night, then draw me a bath so I can relax. You will put on soothing music, wash my back and towel me dry and bring me my robe. You will massage my feet and hands. Then tomorrow, guess who’s going to dress me and comb my hair?”

This Week’s Speaker: Ed Pratt-Dannals and Paul Frase
Youth Awards

Ed Pratt-Dannals was named the Superintendent of Duval County Public Schools in November 2007. He is responsible for operating the nation’s 21st largest school district, with 177 schools, approximately 125,000 students and 14,000 employees.

A life-long educator, Pratt-Dannals began working in the Duval County school system in 1976 as a math teacher at John Gorrie Junior High, and rose through the ranks as a principal, regional superintendent, associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction and chief academic officer. Prior to being named Superintendent in 2007, he served as Chief Academic Officer.

As Superintendent, Pratt-Dannals is committed to making Duval County Public Schools the top performing urban school district in America by providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy, and culturally diverse world.

Under the leadership of Pratt-Dannals, Duval County Public Schools launched a long-range Strategic Plan that will guide the work of the school district during the next four years. This plan outlines the School Board’s vision, mission, core beliefs and commitments, as well as details the district’s goals and specific strategies to successfully implement the Strategic Plan.

Pratt-Dannals is a member of the Duval County Association of Secondary School Administrators, the Florida Association of School Administrators, the Association for Supervisors and Curriculum Development, the National Association of Secondary School Administrators and the Westside Rotary Club of Jacksonville. He has also served as president of both the Duval County Secondary School Principals and the Vice Principals’ Association.

Additionally, Pratt-Dannals is the recipient of several educational honors, including Outstanding Alumnus from the University of North Florida College of Education (2005); the J.J. McCranie Service Above Self Award from the West Jacksonville Rotary (1997); the Commissioner’s Award for Outstanding Principals Among High School Principals in North Florida (1995); a nomination by the Duval County Secondary School Principals as Outstanding High School Principal for Burger King’s In Honor of Excellence Program (1994); and recognition as the Assistant Administrator of the Year by the Duval County Secondary School Administrators (1984).

Pratt-Dannals holds a master’s degree in education from the University of North Florida and a bachelor’s degree from Georgia State University. He is completing a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Florida, which he expects to finish in 2012. The focus of his doctorate program is large, urban school district reform.

Paul Frase was born in 1965 in Elmira, New York and played in the National Football League for 11 seasons, from 1988 to 1998. He played with the New York Jets (1988–1994, where his teammates honored him with the Ed Block Courage Award), the Jacksonville Jaguars (1995–1996), Green Bay Packers (1997), and the Baltimore Ravens (1998).

During the 1995 season, Frase received the Ed Block Courage Award for an unprecedented second time in the award’s 18-year history. He was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 1995 NFL Expansion Draft.

Paul Frase and his wife Alison founded and continue to run a charity called the “The Joshua Frase Foundation”, named after their son Joshua.
Speaker

Andy Hariton introduced our guest speaker, Area Governor Harvey Baxter, who discussed the Guatemala literacy project.

The Guatemala literacy project (GLP) promotes lifelong reading skills in Guatemala by providing badly needed textbooks, reading materials, and computers to schools.

Guatemala was chosen because it has one of the lowest literacy rates in the Western Hemisphere. In some regions, nearly two out of every three adults cannot read or write. A contributing factor to this literacy crisis is the near absence of reading materials. Over 90% of schools lack textbooks and library books.

The project works by the GLP matching Rotary clubs in North America with needy schools in Guatemala. These clubs then raise funds to purchase textbooks, reading materials, and computers. 100% of donations go directly to supporting the project.

Upcoming tour: February 1st - 10th 2013. This ten day trip will include 12 schools and will allow you to see computer labs as well as meet scholarship students. Please contact Harvey if you are interested in going.

Quote of the Day

President, Tim Tebow Foundation

Mission
The Tim Tebow Foundation exists to bring faith, hope and love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need.

Serving Jacksonville
The organization has been serving Jacksonville since its inception in January 2010, but became officially based in Jacksonville this past February when I was hired.

Those served
We are currently directly serving the communities of Jacksonville, Gainesville, Denver and 14 international cities in 12 countries. The primary outreach initiatives of the Tim Tebow Foundation are:

• W15H program — Wish fulfillment for children with life-threatening illnesses.

• Timmy’s Playrooms — Creating playrooms that bring faith, hope and love into children’s hospitals around the world.

• Philippine Hospital — Building a Tebow hospital in a deserving part of the Philippines.

• Supporting orphans — Currently financially supporting more than 600 orphans around the world

Biggest challenge
The biggest challenge was, although the foundation began in January 2010, there was no staff until February of this year, so I was charged with building the groundwork of a new business while already having national attention. Secondly, we are blessed by Tim’s nationwide platform and by the many people who want to help us advance our mission, but it is a challenge finding a way for people around the country to be meaningfully involved in the foundation.

Biggest satisfaction
The biggest satisfaction is knowing that each day we are working toward making people’s lives better. I am pleased that we have successfully built a strong foundation with great outreach and fundraising initiatives, but there is no greater fulfillment for me that sharing faith and love with deserving children

Hometown
Boca Raton

First experience with community service
As an Eagle Scout, I was first exposed to community service at a young age through the Boy Scout program. From a full-time job perspective, I was involved in many community initiatives during my 11 years at the Gator Bowl.

Your job before the Tim Tebow Foundation
Vice president of the Gator Bowl Association.

Upcoming events
Over the next 12 months we plan to launch the following initiatives aimed at community involvement and fundraising:

• 2nd Annual Tim Tebow Foundation, Celebrity Golf Classic.

• Creation of Tim Tebow Foundation Leadership Councils in several U.S. cities.

• Team Tebow.

• Weekly eBay auctions benefitting the foundation (currently running on www.timtebowfoundation.org ).

• Tim Tebow Race Car Raffle in partnership with Richard Petty’s Petty Family Foundation.

Speaker

Highlights included:

Florida formed 300 Million years ago but was underwater until 30 Million years ago when it finally became a land mass.

Great Britain originally owned Florida in the Pre-Revolutionary war era. There were 2 Florida’s back then: East Florida and West Florida. They were the 14th and 15th Colonies and they stayed loyal to the Crown of England at the outbreak of the Revolutionary war. Pensacola was the capital of West Florida and St. Augustine was the capital of East Florida.

Andrew Jackson was the Provisional Governor of Florida for 11 weeks and in 1822 Jacksonville was named after him.

The Hart Bridge was named after Isaiah Hart who named Julia and Laura Streets downtown after his daughters.

Florida became a state in 1845.

Tallahassee was named the state capital because it was centrally located between Pensacola and St. Augustine.

In January 1861 Florida seceded from the Union and became it’s own nation. It then joined the Confederacy in August of 1861. Jacksonville was captured four different times during the Civil War by Union forces.

After the Civil War, Jacksonville was the 3rd largest city in Florida after Cedar Key and Fernandina Beach.

Mr. David Yulee was the only person in Florida to have a City and County named after him.

Jacksonville was the Financial center of the state and given the nickname of FIRE:

Finance
Insurance
Real
Estate

Henry Flagler pushed his railroad further South to St. Augustine then to Palm Beach then to Miami and built the railroad all the way to Key West.

Jacksonville was the 1st Hollywood. Several movies were made here before the industry permanently moved to Hollywood, California.

Jacksonville is now known as the “Bold New City of the South.”

Jacksonville has the most unique history in Florida, the Southeast and the entire country.

The Two Biggest Reasons Jacksonville is a great place to live are the Natural Resources and the Human Resources.

Doug gave 2 gifts of Shark Teeth to President Marshall Butler and Joe Hayworth who’s wife recently had a baby. Congratulations!

He gave everyone who sat through his talk a Map of Jacksonville in the late 1890s.

The West Jacksonville Rotary donated 3 books written by William Bartram in Doug’s name to the libraries of Sacred Heart, Bishop Snyder, and Chafee Trail Elementary.

Quote of the Day

John McCorvey discussed next year’s committee assignments.

Family of Rotary

President Marshall visited Marty Sack. He looks great, although this is taking longer than he hoped. He loved the video, and is pretty ticked at a few of you for jinxing his Blue Devils by agreeing to cheer for them in the tournament. He is looking at nursing homes with River Garden being a strong possibility.

Speaker

Doug Milne introduced our Speaker Billy Carroll who leads the organization Operation New Hope.

It is a program for Non-Violent offenders who have been released from prison. The Program was founded in 2003 by then President Bush to help revitalize our Urban areas around the country. It is a faith based initiative with the Motto “Ready for Work.”

Only 1 out of 20 people in the program get rearrested while 1 in 5 out of the general prison population get rearrested.

Program participants are matched with a Life Coach for 1 year. A Life coach is positive role model who listens and care about the workers while helping them get thru the program and back to being productive members of society. This program helps drastically reduce the cycle for the workers of being reintroduced back into the prison system. Operation New Hope receives it’s funding from both Federal and State Dollars.

Interesting facts:

The United States has 5% of the World’s population.

The United States has 25% of the World’s prison population.

2.5 Million Men & Women are currently in jail in the US.

Another 5 million people are on Probation.

7 million kids have parents or guardians who are currently in jail or on probation.

Quote of the Day

This Week’s Speaker: Billy Carroll
Life Coach Coordinator for Operation New Hope

Following a successful career in financial and mortgage banking services, our speaker Bill Carroll took on a new role – Volunteer Coordinator for Operation New Hope, an organization dedicated to improving urban communities through investing in its residents, and Keystone Leader of its Ready 4 Work program, an initiative designed to combat the growing recidivism rate.

Ready 4 Work is not a social handout, but rather a good business model providing Early Recruitment (enlisting convict involvement prior to release from prison), Case Management (assistance with obtaining drivers licenses, medication, etc.), Career Development Training (providing knowledge and improving skill sets), Life Coaching (advice, encouragement, role modeling), and Sales and Marketing (“You will succeed in getting a job!”). The 750,000 inmates released each year are ill-prepared to overcome obstacles, and most have insufficient social skills. Ready 4 Work gives them hope, a priceless advantage.

Scary statistics: 5% of the world’s population lives in the U.S., 25% of the world’s incarcerated population is in the U.S. We have 2.4 million in prison and 5.1 million of probation or parole. 7 million children have at least 1 parent in prison or on probation or parole, which greatly increases the chances of those children repeating their parent’s pattern.

With Ready 4 Work, the recidivism rate has dropped to 5% - 15%, compared to the national norm of 75%. Think about that. Nine-out- of-ten Ready to Work ex-inmates stay on the job. And the cost of re-incarceration is substantially reduced, which has brought this program to the attention of 3 presidents now.

Notes

We had a great meeting with the MiddleAct kids. In their first project, they raised $2300, enough to buy 8 video projectors for their classrooms. They are about to start a campus beautification project. Really neat to see them lead their own meetings and finish with the 4-way test.
